The goal for our project is to make Rutgers a safer place for students and faculty. The last thing people should be worrying about is their safety when coming to a school environment. The school should provide as many resources as they can to make sure people feel comfortable. We believe that more can be done for this school and campus. Unfortunately there is a lot of crime that happens and is reported but not always resolved because the perpetrator is never caught. And there are also cases where crime goes unreported. Through this project we want students and faculty to be able to report live crime so the community can see what’s going on at the exact moment it is happening.
The problem is that a school of 50,000 people spread across multiple campuses is hard to maintain and keep safe. There aren’t enough resources available to protect and inform the community. The crime alert that we have now sends crime alerts hours or even days after the crime happens. Why is this a problem? To illustrate, consider a hypothetical scenario where an apartment is robbed. The delayed alert leaves residents uninformed, potentially putting them at risk. Our project aims to address this problem by enabling real-time crime reporting, ensuring the community remains informed and safe, and fostering a more secure environment for all at Rutgers.
Our proposed solution is to create an app that lets students and faculty alert crime and suspicious activities live. This will alert all users in a 5 mile radius not only to inform users but also help keep track of what is going on. For example if a perpetrator is running away, the user can write their description for other users to keep track of and share if they see where the perpetrator is running off to. We will also add an option to call/text emergency services right from the app depending on the severity of the issue. We understand that there can be many false claims, but all claims will be reviewed and followed up on. We will also develop a system for verifying the credibility of reports, like user authentication and cross referencing with other data sources. The reporting system will also allow users to add evidence, such as photos, to help assess the report. If users are caught submitting false claims with ill intent, depending on the severity of the claim, they may go through the legal process of submitting false claims. We will also develop a system for verifying the credibility of reports, like user authentication and cross referencing with other data sources.
